Your Ames Voice

Thursday, July 17, 2025

Hello!

My name is Amber Mohmand, and I’m the news editor for the Ames Voice. It’s great to (virtually) meet you!

I’m originally from Afghanistan, but moved to Ames 25 years ago. I decided to stay in Ames and attend Iowa State to study journalism — I graduated in May. During my time, I worked at the Iowa State Daily and interned at the Des Moines Register and the Carroll Times Herald. I also took a 1.5-year gap to work as a reporter at the Storm Lake Times Pilot.

I’ve done a little bit of everything, but my primary focus has been on crime and courts (city council is a close second). I’m just at the beginning of my journalism career, and I’m so excited to be a part of a community newspaper in my hometown.

I started getting involved with the Ames Voice in January and have been working with Anthony Capps, the newsroom director, since then. I’m also working with a great team of reporters, photographers and copy editors who are all eager to share the work they’re doing for the Ames Voice.

I want to echo what Anthony said in his letter. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or input for the Ames Voice. If you’re interested in reporting for the Ames Voice, I’d love to talk to you as well.

I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter! :)
