Happy Thursday!
I hope everyone had a chance to see the RAGBRAI riders pass through Story County yesterday. 🚴
My garden finally has some cherry tomatoes growing, and I got to pick some yesterday. It’s fun seeing something you plant grow throughout the summer.
In today’s newsletter, our top story features how Red Granite Farms educates the community with its local produce.
Also, the city hired an outside expert to watch over the new fire station construction and former Cyclone Andrew Mevis is finding success in Green Bay. Community Voices profiles Thomas Rice, who was the football team manager when Iowa State was first called the Cyclones.

For the owners of Red Granite Farms, the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market is a platform to showcase local produce and help the community go beyond the convenience of commercial grocery shopping.
“My kids always say something just tastes better when you grow it yourself, so we want to share that with people. We want to share the bounty of what we grow,” said Nicole Jonas. She has owned and operated Red Granite Farms alongside her husband, Steve, for the past 20 years.
Located at 2013 130th St. near Boone and spanning five-plus acres, Red Granite Farms offers a multitude of fruit and vegetable produce, a perennial plant center and a coop with hundreds of chickens.
Both Nicole and Steve were raised on traditional row crop farms. After earning horticulture degrees from Iowa State, the couple turned their eyes to owning a farm themselves.
