We’re growing together — in more ways than one

It's been a busy and productive year and a half for our team of passionate volunteers and dedicated community leaders. We are thrilled to share an update on our progress as we prepare for a full launch.

Since initial community discussions in 2022, we've laid a robust foundation through extensive strategy building, developing a clear mission, vision, and core values, and conducting comprehensive community and market analyses to ensure our project truly serves the Ames community.

Our commitment to community stewardship has been at the forefront, guiding our efforts to create a paywall-free digital news space and foster civic engagement.

We've also made significant strides in board development, welcoming three exceptional members to the fold – Alison Doyle, Dan Culhane and Kevin Stow – whose diverse experience is invaluable to our success.

On the fundraising front, we're excited to announce that we're swiftly approaching our $105,000 launch goal, with over $103,000 in committed donations and more than $85,000 already in the bank. This incredible support has been bolstered by our first major advertiser, First National Bank, which has provided a generous donation and a strong advertising commitment, validating our vision and giving us a solid start.

Our volunteer editors and reporters have already begun producing compelling content, which you can find on amesvoice.com, a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. We look forward to continuing this journey together, providing comprehensive and trustworthy local news for Ames.

ISU vet students appreciate hot, hands-on opportunities at state fair

by Kyle Werner | Published on August 19, 2025

A team of Iowa State University veterinarians and fourth-year vet students treated and cared for nearly all of the show animals at the Iowa State Fair.

The veterinarians and the students provided services including caring for sick or injured show animals, checking for show requirements such as ear tags, making sure health papers were valid, collecting urine samples for drug screening and even helping with animal birthing – if necessary.

“It’s just about anything that has to do with animals,” Dr. Rachel Friedrich told the Voice.

There were roughly 3,000 animals on the fairgrounds each day, Friedrich said. And each day there were between five and 500 requests for veterinary services.

“We probably see 80% to 90% of the animals that come through,” Friedrich said.

ISU veterinary students have worked at the state fair since 2012 as part of ISU’s veterinary field services unit, which provides an array of veterinary services.
